Women We Admire | Karen + Vanessa of Minnow Bathers May 17 2018

As we head into the May long-weekend, it feels like the first glimpse of true summer and we're picturing ourselves hanging on the beach, preferrably wearing a Minnow Bather's swimsuit. The local Toronto swimwear label was started by friends Karen Donaldson and Vanessa Warrack who still design and manufacture each piece in their Parkdale studio. We love the flattering shapes and unique patterns that look as good as they feel.
We asked Vanessa and Karen a few questions about their everyday practices and small-business lessons.

What's your favourite self care ritual?

V: Dry brushing!  I dry brush my face and body every morning to help circulation and its the best.

Name a book or a band you are obsessed with right now

K: I am obsessed with the book Orlando by Virginia Woolf. It is such an amazing novel.

How do you ground yourself during the day?

V:  I am a runner, so long runs after work are what keep me clear and centred.

How would you spend a perfect 'day off'?

K: I love being in nature, spending time with friends and travelling to new places. Going on a road trip or even spending a day on a beach with friends is the prefect day off for me.

What’s the best part about being an entrepreneur? / What’s the worst part?

K: The best part of being an entrepreneur is making a living doing what we love and designing pieces we feel are lacking in the industry. Collaborating on designs together can also be such a fun, creative, and gratifying process.

The worst part of being an entrepreneur is that there is always work to be done.  There is no clear end of day.

Where do you get your power from?

V : The truth is a bit cheesy, but from each other.  We have been best friends for 16 years and we push each other forward creatively and personally every day.
